Song of the Powers

from Modern Fables (October 2020) by Melody Klein

/

about

This song writing session started from the drums, actually.
At some point where I had most of the melodies down, I started singing this poem I've known for many years, written by David Mason, and came up with a melody for here. I did adjust the poem slightly (adding 2 lines to each of the first three verses). It was already etched into my mind with the original ending, but otherwise I might have changed those last few lines to be more cheerful.

lyrics

Mine, said the stone,
mine is the hour.
I crush the scissors,
such is my power.
Stronger than wishes,
my power, alone.
(Its force unleashes,
Such is the stone.)

Mine, said the paper,
mine are the words
that smother the stone
with imagined birds,
reams of them, flown
from the mind of the shaper.
(The rest will all moan,
So said the paper.)

Mine, said the scissors,
mine all the knives
gashing through paper’s
ethereal lives;
nothing’s so proper
as tattering wishes.
(The scissors' hand upper,
It said so, malicious.)

As stone crushes scissors,
as paper snuffs stone
and scissors cut paper,
They all end alone.
So heap up your paper
and scissor your wishes
and uproot the stone
from the top of the hill.
They all end alone
as you will, you will.
