Modern Fables (October 2020)

1.
You have built an empire You did it all by hand Looked upon it, basked in pride Your empire made of sand It glinted in the sunlight The sun's rays shined bright But your empire made of sand Did not expect the night As the sun was setting Everybody went inside The moon's effect upsetting And soon came the tide With the return of the sun there was nothing to be done No amount of digging could bring back the fun The sea, it did offend This was the end Of your empire made of sand
2.
Where did they go? Where do they hide? Must be a place of wonder That we can't find They just disappear Somewhere out of sight They must not like it here They chose to take flight The land of missing socks Where nobody talks But really better yet No one's there to sweat
3.
Mine, said the stone, mine is the hour. I crush the scissors, such is my power. Stronger than wishes, my power, alone. (Its force unleashes, Such is the stone.) Mine, said the paper, mine are the words that smother the stone with imagined birds, reams of them, flown from the mind of the shaper. (The rest will all moan, So said the paper.) Mine, said the scissors, mine all the knives gashing through paper’s ethereal lives; nothing’s so proper as tattering wishes. (The scissors' hand upper, It said so, malicious.) As stone crushes scissors, as paper snuffs stone and scissors cut paper, They all end alone. So heap up your paper and scissor your wishes and uproot the stone from the top of the hill. They all end alone as you will, you will.

Alice fell down a hole Wound up in a curious hall Many doors, from large to small Drinks and cakes that made her bowl Her tears formed a pool, She felt like such a fool, The animals swam and got cooled, To get dry, they ran, unruled. There was the hookah smoking dude, Sitting on a mushroom, being quite rude And the grin without a cat, Also quite the brat. The March Hare and the hatter ahead, What was it the dormouse said? Their tea party, quite Kafkaesque, "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" A bizarre game of croquet with the queen, With flamingos, a very strange scene. Before the gryphon took her, she heard "Off with his head!" And the mock turtle, well, he tried to be sad. Was Alice ever to leave this plane? Or was she to change sizes again and again? There was some mess about the theft of a torte, "All persons more than a mile high must leave the court!" Now you can chill there by the wall, Or follow her down the rabbit hole. Could I interest you in some laughing gas? Or would you rather walk through the looking glass?
5.
Tell me your story Don't let it end Your chronicle is epic The stuff of legend Did it ever happen? Are you telling lies? This all sounds imagined Did you really touch the skies? Play me your music Let me hear your voice You need not be elusive Allow me to rejoice Is this your writing? Did you have a choice? Could you try to be exciting? It kinda sounds like noise
